What is german chamomile?

German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is a small plant with delicate white petals and a yellow center native to southern and eastern Europe. German chamomile resembles a daisy. It has a sweet scent herbaceous aroma with a hint of fresh, sweet apples. It is an ancient herb that has been widely used for centuries. The herb's calming effects were well-known enough to grace the pages of Hippocrates.

German chamomile is one of the two types of chamomile that is most widely cultivated and used for commercial purposes. The other is Roman chamomile. Both are very similar, in appearance and in properties. Teas, herbs, and cosmetics that contain chamomile will most likely contain one of these two types.

German Chamomile and Chamazulene

Both Roman and German chamomile contain calming and soothing properties; however, German chamomile has more effective anti-inflammatory properties. This made German chamomile the must-have ingredient for our toner!

In the steam distillation process to create our hydrosols, the oil and the water solution separated contain the plant’s essential compounds and beneficial properties.

Once the German chamomile is distilled, it produces chamazulene. Chamazulene is a compound found in some plants, especially chamomile, that is what gives chamomile its wonderful anti-inflammatory properties.

Although both Roman and German chamomile produce it, German chamomile contains a higher concentration, making it more potent as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic.

This is what makes German chamomile an amazing ingredient for a face toner. Its anti-inflammatory properties help with soothing eczema and red or irritated skin.
