The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a deciduous shrub of the subfamily Pomegranate in the pomegranate family, growing between 5 and 10 meters (16 and 33 feet) in height.Young pomegranate tree in Side,Turkey,Pomegranates were originally described throughout the Mediterranean region. It was introduced to Spanish America in the late 16th century and to California by Spanish settlers in 1769.The fruit is usually in season from March to May in the Southern Hemisphere and September to February in the Northern Hemisphere. As a whole sarcotestas or juice, pomegranates are used in baking, cooking, smoothies, meal garnishes, smoothies, and alcoholic beverages such as cocktails and wine.Pomegranates are widely grown in the Middle East and the Caucasus,North and Tropical Africa, Iran, Armenia, the Indian subcontinent,Central Asia, the drier regions of Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean Basin.

Etymology pomegranate seed oil

The pomegranate is probably derived from the Old French word pomme-grenade,which in Early English was known as the "apple of Grenada" a word that exists today only in heraldic arms. This is a folk etymology confusing the Latin granatus with the name of the Spanish city of Granada of Arabic origin.Garnet is derived from Old French grenat by metathesis, from Medieval Latin granatum, used in a different sense of "crimson".This derivation may have originated from pomum granatum, describing the color of pomegranate flesh, or from granum, referring to "the red dye, carmine".The modern French term grenade for pomegranate has given it the name grenade grenades.

Descriptions

The pomegranate is a shrub or small tree 5 to 10 meters (16 to 33 ft) tall with multiple prickly branches that is long-lived, with some specimens in France living up to 200 years.P.granatum leaves opposite or subopposite, glossy, narrowly oblong-elliptic, intact, 3–7 cm (1+1⁄4–2+3⁄4 in) long, 2 cm (3⁄4 in) wide 4 inches). The flowers are bright red, 3 cm (1+1⁄4 in) in diameter, with three to seven petals. Some non-fruiting varieties are grown for flowering.

Fruits, testa and seeds

The reddish-purple pomegranate husk has two parts: the outer, firm pericarp, and the inner, spongy mesocarp (white "albedo"), which includes the inner lining of the fruit to which the seeds are attached. The membrane of the mesocarp is organized into asymmetric chambers that contain seeds within the sarcotestas that are embedded without being attached to the mesocarp. The sap-containing seed coat is formed as a thin film derived from the epidermal cells of the seed. The number of seeds in a pomegranate varies from 200 to about 1,400.

Botanically, an edible fruit is a berry whose seeds and pulp are produced by the ovary of a flower. The fruit is between the size of a lemon and a grapefruit, 5–12 cm (2–4+1⁄2 in) in diameter, round in shape, with a thick, reddish husk.In ripe fruit, the juice obtained by pressing the seeds develops a sour taste due to the low pH (4.4) and high content of polyphenols, which can cause indelible red stains on fabrics. The hyperpigmentation of pomegranate juice is mainly due to the presence of anthocyanins and ellagitannins.
