Petitgrain oil is produced from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium amara), a member of the Rutaceae plant family. Bitter orange belongs to the Rutaceae family and is believed to have originated in South-East Asia, and spread to North-Eastern India, Burma and China.

Neroli essential oil​ is distilled from the flowers, bitter orange from the peel of the fruit, and petitgrain from the leaves and twigs. Petitgrain is often referred to as the “poor man’s neroli”, since it is more cost-effective yet provides many of the same health benefits.

The term “organic,” often used interchangeably with the term “natural,” is in fact quite distinct from this comparative word by virtue of the government guidelines and the national standards that allow organic products to qualify as such.
